Cerro Lopez is located in Circuito Chico. It is one of San Carlos de Bariloche most traditional ascents. It has an altitude of 2075 meters (6807 ft) above sea level. This challenge begins in Bahia Lopez and heads west via the Mirador del Brazo Tristeza trail. This route has a steep line with impressive views of Cerro Tronador, Brazo Tristeza del Nahuel Huapi Lake, and Cerro Capilla, until arriving the peak north of Lopez. Within the first hour and a half of walking, there is a section which involves fourth-degree rock climbing, where we will utilize a rope to keep us safe. The ascent continues with steep but simple sections and later crosses a field of rather loose rocks. The view that you can see from the edge of the summit is exceptional, so we can contemplate the volcanoes of Chile and the desert plains to the east. From here we will be able to continue along the edge and arrive at another summit called “Pico Turista,” but you can descend in a direct line to Lopez Hut until arriving at Arroyo Lopez (the beginning of the regular hike). It is important to mention that the descent from Pico Turista is steep, and therefore requires disengaging in some sections. After a long walk and taking advantage of being in Circuito Chico, we will be able to enjoy a delicious, cold artisanal beer.
