This 3-day (2 night) trip is one of the most traditional trips in the region, where you can live across from the same Andes mountain range, utilizing the comfort offered by the best-known mountain huts in the Nahuel Huapi National Park.
The trip begins at the base station of Cerro Catedral, leaving on the same southeast trail and continuing until the valley of Arroyo Van Titter. The first two hours of the trip are easy and pleasant. We will enter a beech forest and will cross a small bridge, until arriving at Piedritas Hut, taking only an hour’s ascent from there. This last hour of walking is the most challenging because we will be reaching a high elevation. The Emilio Frey Hut, located 1750 meters at the foot of Frey steeple and the shore of Laguna Toncek, will be our point of arrival for Day 1. Here we will be able to relax and enjoy the emblematic landscape until dinner. Walking Distance: Approximately 10 km (6.2 miles). Walking Time Day 1: approx. 3/4 hours
Fed and well rested, we will leave early to continue the trip beginning with the ascent to Laguna Schmoll, which will take us approximately 1 hour. We will continue ascending through steep terrain. It will take us an hour to arrive at the northern ridge of Cerro Catedral. From here you will be able to observe some of the most impressive landscapes in Bariloche. Later it continues with a pleasant descent toward the valley of Arroyo Rucaco. We will cross wooded areas and crystalline creeks and without noticing it we will have reached Paso Brecha Negra del Filo del Cerro Tres Reyes. From this ridge, you can contemplate San Martin Hut or “Jakob.” It will take us an hour and a half more to walk to Laguna Jakob. San Martin Hut, located at 1564 meters (5131 ft) above sea level, together with Jakob Lake, will be our point of arrival for Day 2. We will be able to relax after a long day until dinner. Walking Distance: approx. 9.5 km (5.6 miles). Walking Time Day 2: approx. 6/8 hours
The third day will be a bit calmer. We will begin with a delicious breakfast and those who wish to, can take a short walk to “Laguna de los Tempanos” and the Schweitzer Pass, where you will have a beautiful view of the valley of Arroyo Casalata. Said walk lasts approximately 3 hours. Later in the afternoon, we will start the descent of the traditional trail of Jakob, bordering Arroyo Casa de Piedra until arriving at Tambo Baez, where the trip ends. Walking Distance: approx. 5/6 kms Walking Time Day 2: approx. 6/8 hours
OPTIONAL: You can extend this trip by 2 days and 1 night more, combining it with the Laguna Negra Hut and Lopez Hut, in order to contemplate the Trip to 4 Huts.
Important!! You should keep in mind that this trip will have approximately 4- to 8-hour walking trips and the terrains that we walk will have ascents and descents through quarries with heavy backpacks, for which being in good physical shape is recommended. In the spring it tends to snow in the area, for which good hiking shoes are recommended.
